Podcasts were once considered a fringe entertainment medium. These days, advances in recording hardware and software make podcasts one of the most popular forms of entertainment on the planet. In fact, podcast listening grew by 26 percent in 2018, according to Edison Research.
I’ve even done a podcast of my own (and more will come in 2019).
Comedy podcasts are my personal favorite, and there was no shortage of laughs this year. If you’re looking for something funny to listen to, try one of these humor podcasts run by professional comedians.
10. Dragon Friends: A Dungeons & Dragons Comedy Podcast
Cast: Dave Harmon, Benny Davis, Ben Jenkins, Alex Lee, Michael Hing
Best Episode: Put It All on Red
Dan Harmon brought us Community and Rick and Morty, and this podcast features him playing Dungeons and Dragons with a slew of comedian friends. If you’re a fan of the genre, also check out the Aimless Adventure Podcast, which started from a D&D match years earlier. And if you haven’t seen it, Community has two great D&D episodes.
9. Judge John Hodgman
Cast: John Hodgman, Jesse Thorn
Best Episode: Christmas Music Ruling
Over the course of nearly 400 episodes, comedian John Hodgman (the PC to Justin Long’s Mac) and his bailiff Jesse Thorn (sometimes replaced with a guest bailiff) dissect the most pressing issues of our times and provide a hilariously logical ruling. Don’t forget to check out his weekly New York Times column and This American Life.
8. With Special Guest Lauren Lapkus
Cast: Lauren Lapkus, Traci Reardon
Best Episode: Parenting Made Easy
Comedian Lauren Lapkus is on a roll coming into 2018 with Orange is the New Black, Crashing, and a ton of other high-profile content on the market. She also has one of the best podcasts on the planet, with over 150 episodes featuring guest stars interviewing Lapkus about important topics of the day.
7. Bill Burr’s Monday Morning Podcast
Cast: Bill Burr, Nia Burr
Best Episode: Bill sits down with Brian Regan
Comedians Bill Burr and Al Madrigal make some of the funniest podcasts out there. Burr isn’t afraid to tackle any topic, and this podcast is a great way to get your fix of his ramblings in between his stand-up specials (Why Do I Do This? is still hilarious) and animated episodes of F Is for Family on Netflix.
Cast: Chris Hardwick
Best Episode: Nick Offerman
Chris Hardwick proved the power of podcasting when he created Nerdist Industries. His flagship podcast has since been renamed to ID10T, but it’s the same podcast that made him famous. If you can’t get enough of Hardwick, don’t forget to check out The Talking Dead and @Midnight on cable TV, along with the rest of the podcasts on the Nerdist network.
5. How Did This Get Made
Cast: Paul Scheer, June Diane Raphael, Jason Mantzoukas
Best Episode: Ninja Terminator
Three of the funniest comedians to hit stage and screen sit down for a Mystery Science Theater 3000-like experience watching bad movies with other comedian guests. It’s a lot like Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, but with a lighter view. The movies are typically terrible, although Paul does have another podcast dedicated to better movies (much to Jason and June’s dismay).
4. Throwing Shade
Cast: Erin Gibson, Bryan Safi
Best Episode: Paul F Tompkins
Erin and Bryan will tackle any hot-button topic, from women’s rights to LGBTQ issues, politics, and more. They both came from the Upright Citizen’s Brigade that spawned Amy Poehler, Matt Walsh, and Ian Roberts, and they’re just as funny as their brethren.
3. My Dad Wrote A Porno
Cast: Jamie Morton, James Cooper, Alice Levine
Best Episode: The Job Interview
It will take you exactly one episode to fall in love with this witty British podcast. Morton and his friends read chapter by chapter through a series of erotic novels called Belinda Blinked, written by his dad under the pen name Rocky Flintstone. It’s easily the funniest podcast you’ll hear all year.
2. Anna Faris Is Unqualified
Cast: Anna Faris, Sim Sarna
Best Episode: Chelsea Handler
Anna Faris is one of the funniest female comedians to appear on the screen. From movies like Scary Movie and Just Friends to her sitcom Mom (and run on Friends) to her love advice podcast, Faris just keeps delivering laughs. Similar to Dr. Drew’s Loveline, she delivers relationship advice to random callers for half her podcast while interviewing celebrity guests for the other.
1. Bodega Boys
Cast: Desus Nice, The Kid Mero
Best Episode: FP the Zeitgeist
Desus and Mero are everywhere these days, having created shows for Viceland, Showtime, and more. Bodega Boys is their latest podcast, and it’s every bit as funny and edgy as the rest of their offerings. If you don’t already know this duo, you’re missing out on the best in the modern game.
