We all watch TV shows, and which is the “best” is a matter of opinion. With that being said, here are the top 10 worst TV police officers of all time. Feel free to check out other lists throughout Thought for Your Penny.
10. Dexter Morgan “Dexter”
Actor: Michael C Hall
Aired: 2006-2013, Showtime
His day job is the help the police as a consultant and employee of the Miami Police Department. His side gig is as a serial killer. I feel like there’s a conflict of interest.
9. Chief Clancy Wiggum “The Simpsons”
Actor: Hank Azaria
Aired: 1989-Present, Fox
Honestly everyone on Springfield’s police department is incompetent, but as Police Chief, Wiggum takes the cake (donuts).
8. Deputy Barney Fife “The Andy Griffith Show”
Actor: Don Knotts
Aired: 1960-1968, CBS
Much of Sheriff Taylor’s time is spent making up for his bumbling deputy’s gross incompetence.
7. Lt Frank Drebin “Police Squad!”
Actor: Leslie Neilsen
Aired: 1982, ABC
Gotham is filled with all levels of thugs, criminals, and villains. Keeping the streets is no easy task, but Commissioner Gordon not only does so, he is probably the least corrupt cop in Hollywood.
6. Detective Charles Boyle “Brooklyn Nine-Nine”
Actor: Joe Lo Truglio
Aired: 2013-Present, Fox
He may work harder than anybody else, but I’m pretty sure Det. Boyle has sexually harassed every female officer in the NYPD.
5. Lieutenant Jim Dangle “Reno 911!”
Actor: Thomas Lennon
Aired: 2003-2009, Comedy Central
Basically incompetent and incapable, Dangle is the last person you’d want in charge of a police department. He plays hooky, can barely remember Miranda rights, and often creates a hostile work environment.
4. Sheriff Rosco P. Coltrane “The Dukes of Hazzard”
Actor: James Best
Aired: 1979-1985, CBS
He’s bumbling, corrupt, and always after those duke boys. It’s hard to feel safe in Hazzard County, Georgia when the sheriff is breaking the most laws.
3. Officer George Mendez “Orange Is the New Black”
Actor: Pablo Schreiber
Aired: 2013-Present, Netflix
What’s worse than being in prison? Having a guard constantly sexually and physically abusing you. Pornstache (as he’s affectionately known to the inmates of Litchfield Penetentiary) is pretty much your worst nightmare of a corrections officer.
2. Officer Eddie Walker “The Wire”
Actor: Ben McKenzie
Aired: 2002-2008, HBO
Walker is corrupt and hated by both sides of the badge. He steals from drug dealers and even breaks Donut’s fingers for pretty much no reason.
1. Detective Vic Mackey “The Shield”
Actor: Michael Chiklis
Aired: 2002-2008, FX
He’s the protagonist of the series, but he’s committed a slew of crimes, ranging from extortion and obstruction of justice to murder. He even murders a cop and is an accessory to about a dozen others.
