What it’s like being dissed by Eminem

He dissed me once, and he did it subliminally, so I don’t get any of the fame someone like MGK gets. It’s not so much that he “sneak dissed” me (which he claims not to do) as it is that I’m just some nobody.

Eminem spits pure venom, and I agree with the assessment that he is harsher on Kim (and his family in general) than anybody.

But I did manage to get under his skin once. It started with a Twitter argument I got into in late 2013 with a journalist for a rap website about Eminem being the greatest rapper alive.

My assertion is that Lil Wayne did more for hiphop and is a bigger legend than Eminem. I published it in HuffPost, where it no longer exists. But it was published on the front page the morning after I posted it and riled up the entire rap blogosphere.

There’s a blog on Genius disputing my blog line by line. I was super high, used hilarious arguments involving rock and roll, and really trolled everybody.

The Huffington Post (Ft. Brian Penny) – Sorry, Slim, But Lil Wayne Is the Greatest MC Alivevia The Huffington Posthttps://genius.com/amp/The-huffington-post-sorry-slim-but-lil-wayne-is-the-greatest-mc-alive-lyrics

And you can still find remnants of all the flames in the forums over it.

I’m not working in the rap industry, and because of that, many believe I don’t have a right to criticize the music.

Of course, my perspective is that if you’re in the public mainstream, you open yourself to any criticism. And if I can hear it, I’m forming an opinion by birth right.

The Huffington Post Names Lil Wayne The Greatest Living MC Over Eminem.Lil Wayne and Eminem have a lot in common. Both have fan bases that span the globe, classic albums, many hit singles, millions of records sold and have dominated the Billboard charts for years. But…

True though, he has Nicki and Drake and now he gets to sit back and enjoy.https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/after-8-years-is-the-lil-wayne-reign-finally-over.593202/page-2

Who would’ve thought a silly high post late at night would’ve done anything. And of course with the rap bloggers all up in arms, it amplified the original article.

At the time, I didn’t really think about it, but Marshall Mathers is a sensitive guy who can’t take criticism. I should have known, having listened to him for so long. And as it happened, Eminem was in the studio in late 2013 when that was going on.

He was recording his verse for “Calm Down” with Busta Rhymes.

When it was released in July 2014, I listened to it (I’m a fan), but I couldn’t help but feel a little personally attacked by these lines in particular:

Me and Bus put it down like a sick pet
You’re fucking with vets dawg, fucking internet bloggers
“I sit in front of my computer all day and comment on
Everything, I’m an expert on everything, everything sucks, play the next song”
Guess if I hopped out your freaking laptop, you idiot prick
With Biggie and kicked the living shit out of you, I’d be dead wrong
Son of God I’m not soft like a wet log, pores never get clogged
I’m so full of self-esteem that I sweat fog

Eminem – Calm Down

Now he doesn’t specifically say “fuck Brian Penny,” but I do know that I was in his head for a solid month to get what was likely his entire entry during that round of his back-and-forth with Busta based off me.

But nobody noticed that timeline, and even Genius has guesses about who this references. They dispute claims it was Anthony Fantano, the YouTuber most believe is being referenced.

He claimed credit for it, but even Genius didn’t believe him. What those users Failed to put together was the timeline of when I compared Eminem to Lil Wayne and declared Wayne the better rapper on HuffPost.

Em wasn’t mad at rap critics in the song – he was mad at internet bloggers who aren’t rap critics criticizing rap. He was mad at me.

So, it’s an interesting dynamic to think of from Eminem’s perspective and one he’s fully aware of, as mentioned in “The Ringer”

You mention me, millions of views, attention in news
I mention you, lose-lose for me, win-win for you
Billions of views, your ten cents are two
Skim through the music to give shit reviews
To get clicks, but bitch, you just lit the fuse

He got sued by a former classmate and his own mother for name dropping them in his songs. On the other end, I’m a Stan who managed to actually piss off one of my favorite artists growing up.

I was the muse for one of my childhood idols, and some other more popular guy got all the credit. Now I know what all those nameless groupies feel like…
