Rick and Morty Season 4 Episode 1 Recap – Edge of Tomorty Rick and Morty returns for a fourth season of comical sci-fi mayhem.
Rick and Morty’s relationship has changed since the Smith family reunited. Instead of just pulling Morty along on rides, he has to ask. This seems like a subtle jab at creator Dan Harmon’s sensitivity training following 2018 sexual misconduct allegations.
This leads Rick to ask Morty to accompany him to gather death crystals, which Morty is happy to do after drooling over his crush Jessica.
They dodge asteroid field to get to the death crystals. Rick teaches Morty about the millions of deaths and possibilities based on choices.
Morty sees a death with him and Jessica in old age and he follows the minute path that leads him to dying in her arms. Unfortunately this leads to him killing Rick in a spaceship crash, activating Hologram Rick.
Project Phoenix is activated across a range of universes, resulting in Fascist Rick, Shrimp Rick, and other ridiculous Rick clones.
While Rick grapples with the amount of Nazi worlds, Morty is actively ignoring Hologram Rick protests that he reanimate Rick. Morty refuses because he wants to die with Jessica.
Blindly following the direction of the death crystal, Morty walks out of class and mistakenly taunts a bully, who’s now going to kill him. Now Morty needs to get armed fast.
Morty goes too far, dismantling the bullies and turning into an Akira-like omnipotent being and killing a ton of police officers. Soon he surrenders to the military and goes on trial. He gets off by repeating the judge’s dead husband’s last words and sending a message from the grave, and he soon ends up on the news.
Clone Wasp Rick uses a Kirkland Meseeks and Hologram Rick to attack Morty in his final form and remove the death crystal from his forehead.
The alien symbiotic that once bonded with Morty bonds with Hologram Rick, turning him into a living God who must be stung to death by Wasp Rick.
They return home and reconcile, getting annoyed at Summer (and somewhat annoying Beth and Jerry). The credits roll, then we find out the reality of Morty’s dream death with Jessica, which drives him to no longer care.
