The New Mutants Brings a New Class of Mutants to New Audiences Disney's $100 million project seeks to expand the X-universe beyond Deadpool

When Disney acquired 20th Century Fox, it also grabbed the movie rights for Marvel’s mutants. This put The New Mutants into a delayed post-production that included several reshoots before finally being scheduled for release during 2020’s COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite these odds, the movie’s coming out, and we have on-set interviews from the cast and crew about what fans of the comics and movies alike can expect from these superheroes.

Director Josh Boone discusses the movie’s production during a turbulent time in which new leadership was taking things in a new creative direction.

Charlie Heaton explains what it was like playing Sam Guthrie, who becomes Cannonball when he joins the New Mutants team. He becomes invincible while propelling himself through the air as though shot from a cannon.

Maisie Williams has a pivotal role in the film as Rahne Sinclaire. Rahne is a Scottish werewolf who also adheres strictly to her religion. In the comics, she eventually leaves the New Mutants to join X-Factor and X-Force.

Blu Hunt joins the cast as Danielle Moonstar, a Native American Mutant whose codename is Mirage. Mirage plays with people’s heads, much like Scarlet Witch was portrayed in the Avengers films. She also has a romance with Rahne.

Alice Braga plays Cecilia Reyes in the movie. She doesn’t have a cool superhero name, but she’s the group’s mentor (a la Professor X) and does have Invisible Woman’s force-field power. This Puerto Rican mutant was only briefly an X-Man before forming the New Mutants team.

With such a talented cast and the property finally in the right hands, this should be a great film to distract us from the 2020 elections. Check it out in theaters starting today.
