Jack Sparrow is now an iconic part of pop culture, and The Curse of the Black Pearl is the reason. A swashbuckling adventure that spawned too many sequels, you’ll be inspired to visit Tortuga yourself. Just be sure to avoid those pirates.

Rating: PG-13
Director: Gore Verbinski
Starring: Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Orlando Bloom

9. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005) 75% at Rotten Tomatoes

Despite its religious origins and lack of Oxford comma, I love this movie (and book) about four kids travelling through a wardrobe to the magical world of Narnia. This is the first (and best) in the film series and is the perfect winter movie to watch with some tea and Turkish delight.

Rating: PG
Director: Andrew Adamson
Starring: Tilda Swinton, Georgie Henley, William Moseley

8. The Brothers Grimm (2005) 38% at Rotten Tomatoes

Will and Jake Grimm are con artists until a genuine fairy tale curse brings their tall tales to life. It’s been said to have all style and no substance, but that style is enough, especially when the subjects are the brothers responsible for the greatest fairy tales of all time.

Rating: PG-13
Director: Terry Gilliam
Starring: Heath Ledger, Matt Damon, Monica Bellucci

7. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) 96% at Rotten Tomatoes

The second film in the LOTR series is easily the best. That’s because of the battle for Helm’s Deep, which is the best reason to watch the entire series. The third drags on forever, and the first is a bit slow to start the adventure off, but The Two Towers is a simply stunning film.

Rating: PG-13
Director: Peter Jackson
Starring: Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Cate Blanchett

6. Big Fish (2003) 77% at Rotten Tomatoes

Tim Burton knows fantasy, and this tale about a son working his way through his dad’s tall tales is more relatable than it should be. We all have a dad who caught a fish bigger than it really was, but how many of us have seen the crazy things this guy has?

Rating: PG-13
Director: Tim Burton
Starring: Ewan McGregor, Helena Bonham Carter, Billy Crudup

5. The Golden Compass (2007) 42% at Rotten Tomatoes

Lyra Belacqua is on an adventure to the far North to save her best friend, who’s been kidnapped by a powerful church called the Magisterium. Everyone turns in brilliant performances while bringing this fantasy to life. It’ll make you want a polar bear for all the wrong reasons.

Rating: PG-13
Director: Chris Weitz
Starring: Nicole Kidman, Daniel Craig, Dakota Blue Richards

4. The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2010) 64% at Rotten Tomatoes

A stubborn girl hires a tough U.S. Marshal named Rooster Cogburn to track down her father’s killer, outlaw Tom Chaney. A Texas Ranger is also on the quest in this remake of the most iconic John Wayne role of his career. Even the remake plays well, and you’ll like it more than the original.

Rating: PG-13
Director: Terry Gilliam
Starring: Lily Cole, Heath Ledger, Christopher Plummer

3. Bridge to Terabithia (2007) 85% at Rotten Tomatoes

One of the first books to make me cry as a kid was Bridge to Terabithia. You get so attached to Leslie Burke until she befalls a horrible fate. Kids make up fantasy worlds together out of nothing to escape reality, and this is a coming-of-age tale that’ll stick with you for years.

Rating: PG
Director: Gabor Csupo
Starring: Josh Hutcherson, AnnaSophia Robb, Zooey Deschanel

2. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001) 80% at Rotten Tomatoes

When an orphan learns he’s actually a wizard, his adventure into the wizarding world of Hogwarts begins. Everything J.K. Rowling is beloved these days, and this is the movie about the book that started it all. Rekindle your love for Harry Potter all over.
