Stop Wasting Money! These 7 Staycations Will Change Your Life

At some point in our lives, we get this strange idea in our heads that a vacation entails spending a lot of money to endure rigorous screening for the pleasure of relaxing in a hotel or by a pool in a different part of the planet. Anyone can lounge in a hotel, and planning a hectic schedule around it doesn’t change what it is. Instead of throwing money away doing what everyone else is, save money, gas, and time with one of these staycations.

1. Watch an Entire TV Series

No matter how much time you spend staring at your television like a zombie, there’s at least one season of something you’ve been meaning to watch and haven’t yet. With $100+ cable, internet, and mobile subscriptions enabling access to $50+ in Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, Netflix, and other streaming content, you can kill at least a day, if not an entire week-long vacation, watching The Sopranos, Chuck, South Park, or whatever show your heart desires from pilot to finale (if applicable).

2. Enter Virtual Reality

Virtual Reality E3 2015

Facebook’s Oculus Rift will soon become just another virtual reality headset in our lives. Between PAX, E3, and InfoComm 2014, I saw more than a dozen different VR companies promoting different hardware and software capabilities. It won’t be long until you can go anywhere you want from the comfort of your own home.

3. Start a Second Life

Tired of living the life you’ve been living? Sick of all the responsibilities that go along with being you? Start a second account on all your favorite websites. Doing so will require a different email address.

Make up a second personality, and use that person’s info to populate all the fields. By the end of a day, you can build an entirely new person online the  same way you would with a character selection UI within a video game. From there, you can start an entirely new life, trolling, catfishing, and snooping around the world with (seemingly) no limits.

Just remember great power comes with great responsibility.

4. Binge on Movie Lists

Some movies are best watched through a themed list or theme party. For example, gather some friends for a superhero movie or Harry Potter marathon. Really this is the same as TV season binging, but I wanted to fluff up this post a bit, so they’re different. It’s my blog – deal with it.

5. Experiment with Hallucinogens

Ever watched DMT: The Spirit Molecule on Netflix? DMT, mescaline, LSD, Mushrooms, and all the other mind-altering hallucinogens aren’t as hard to come by as you’d think. Look up Burning Man and the burner community.

Get to know these people and the underground party/EDM scene, and you’ll eventually stumble upon hallucinogens. These can take your mind to a whole other state of consciousness for minutes to hours. Out-of-body experiences are as relaxing as any vacation you ever took, and with much more productive epiphanies. Try them dissolved in glycerin…

6. Live Minimally

Camping is a recreational activity to some, but it’s survival for most. If you have some time on your hands, try your hand at surviving in the wilderness, whether in a State or National Park or within your city. Living as a vagabond for a week can change your entire perspective on life. As an alternative, you can also cancel all your utilities and subscriptions, at the end of the week only reactivating the ones you really missed.

7. Meditate

Everyone in the world can benefit from a day or a week of straight meditation. Shut off all the distractions, lock yourself in your home, and focus on breathing in…and out…

Ignore all the marketing from the tourism industry. Hotels, motels, airlines, car rental companies, luggage companies – they all profit from your blind belief that packing some stuff and travelling to another city will change your life. It’s not your location that matters, and a week at a time is no way to travel the globe. Take a staycation, and spend the rest of your time at home, working toward monetizing your dreams.
