Here’s a quick anecdote from my trip to Seattle covering PAX Prime last year.
I was outside in the smoking area puffing on a cigarette and considering whether I should wander through downtown to find some weed when that sweet scent of cannabis hit my nose.
I turned around to see a bearded man in his 40’s that looked like Steve Wozniak (both he and Steve Jobs smoked much more than weed when they turned Apple into a public company) holding a cigarette tin filled with joints.
I asked him if I could hit the joint, and he gave me the one from his mouth then handed me a fresh j for later. I expressed my relief and told him in Arizona, you have to have some serious balls to smoke in public like this. His response was, “Hey, it’s Seattle.”
Then he went on to regale me with stories of how he worked as a developer for Microsoft before leaving to join one of their XBox Live projects. He told me about how Windows 10 would be a free upgrade about a year before it happened.
We talked quite a bit about the tech business while surrounded by cosplayers of all sorts of video games. The Monarch Minion from Venture Bros was one of my favorites, though it was nice seeing the League of Legends and Nintendo fanatics.
Bonding over a joint with a computer programmer at a gaming convention was easily a highlight of my 2014 West Coast road trip.
Then we parted ways and went back inside to get back to work.
