Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 Cast and Choices

Episode 5 of Telltale Games’ Tales from the Borderlands is the series finale and the culmination of a year’s worth of stories. Starting in Helios where Episode 4 left off, Rhys is locked in Handsome Jack’s office while Fiona, Gortys, and Sasha were captured by Yvette.

We’ve all been there…

As the new President of Hyperion, Rhys is given the opportunity to make an important decision. Regardless of what you choose, Handsome Jack will ruin it like some sort of cursed genie.

Meanwhile, Yvette is interrogating Fiona, and eventually you’re given the opportunity to punch her and escape. At the bottom of Handsome Jack’s trapdoor, Fiona and Sasha wait for Rhys, but when he doesn’t show, they get increasingly worried.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 Handsome Jack's Choices
I haven’t fired someone in a long time…it felt good…

In Jack’s office, he explains to Rhys his grand scheme to kill anyone who stands in the way of Hyperion and replacing them with a robot skeleton with Jack’s consciousness loaded into it. After some back and forth, Rhys tries to escape down the trapdoor, but Jack stops him.

The Gortys upgrade falls right as Sasha, Fiona, and Gortys are discussing it, and they leave, assuming Rhys decided to lead the company instead.

When Rhys finally escapes, everyone’s gone, but he does run into Yvette. You can choose to save her life, but I didn’t. Even if I had, I would’ve killed her later on for her betrayal. I don’t play games.

Soon Handsome Jack sends an alert out to the entire space station to look for Rhys, and he stalks Fiona and Sasha. He calls for guards, but when the elevator opens, the guards are dead, and August opens fire on all the monitors, shutting Jack up.

When they arrive in the dock, August, Finch, and Kroger double-cross them. Fiona has one shot at saying something to August, and it’s not long before another gunfight ensues and the ship leaves without Fiona and Kroger.

Trying to shut down the spaceship, Rhys makes his way to the core and attempts hacking it, though it doesn’t work. It’s time to jump onto the core and manually dismantle it.

Handsome Jack opens the vent to air Rhys out, and if you saved Yvette, you also have to save her here. Otherwise you’re given the option to let her die again. Once you shut down the core, the ship starts to descend down on Pandora

With the core shut down, alarms go off, and everyone runs to escape pods. Loader Bot sends Fiona off in one, then heads back after Rhys (since I made up for self-destructing him in Episode 1 by fist-bumping him in Episode 4).

After letting Rhys out, Loader Bot accompanies him to the escape pods, helping him fight off both Kroger and security turrets controlled by Handsome Jack before escaping in his own pod and setting off the intro credits.

Mirror, mirror, on the wall…

Waking up after the crash, Rhys has to break his way out of the escape pod and climb through the rubble back into Handsome Jack’s office. After Jack actually shows a few human moments (one of the best lines of the series is how everyone thinks they’re the hero of their own story), he plugs in and uploads into Rhys’ head.

Jack attempts to kill Rhys with his own robot hand, but Rhys removes it, then picks up a shard of glass and cuts out his datajack and cybernetic eye. You’re given the option to destroy the eye or keep it, and I kept it as a souvenir.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 Sasha Credits

Fiona wakes up in a dust storm with Sasha on the intercom. In the distance, a battle rages. Fiona makes her way toward her sister to find August and Finch (along with a bevy of goons) injured on the ground. She’s given an option to either put Finch out of his misery or let him bleed out.

She sees Vallory shooting a rocket launcher at Gortys, so Fiona makes her way up and attacks her. Vallory explains she’s doing what’s necessary, and aims the rocket again, but the Traveler appears and kills her right in front of August.

Fiona asks Gortys how she can help, and she tells her to shoot her with the rocket launcher, which Fiona does with the help of Sasha.

With Gortys destroyed, the story goes back to Rhys and Fiona, who are being held hostage by the mysterious stranger. As the tale ends, they hear the voice of Kroger, who survived the crash into the Pandora. He brought a bandit leader to trade for Rhys and Fiona.

As Kroger is about to kill Fiona, the stranger grabs him and breaks his neck, dropping his dead body on Fiona, who has to wiggle him off.

Then the bandit leader stands up and makes a signal that causes red dots to appear on each person’s chest. He takes the stranger hostage and frees Rhys and Fiona, bringing them to the base he made out of the crashed Helios space station.

We learn the survivors formed a bandit camp and with Vaughn the only person who’s been on Pandora, he’s elected their leader, and they all worship Rhys for freeing them from their corporate imprisonment.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 Loader Bot

They interrogate the mysterious stranger to learn he’s Loader Bot. He explains his reason for capturing them is to bring them together to save Gortys, whom he watched Fiona kill. He hid his identity to learn the truth without them lying to him.

Soon, they come up with a plan to enter the vault of the traveler and have to put together a crew. Who’s available depends on your choices in previous episodes.

The usual suspects…

If you choose Felix, Fiona will inherit millions and be able to hire a secret vault hunter who turns out to be Claptrap, who’s every bit as annoying as you’d imagine, though less so than Jar Jar Binks (barely).

With Athena, Zer0, and August, Gortys gets some great fighting skills. With Springs and Cassius, the conversation is a little more interesting, though.

Quick cut scenes showing the recruitment of the vault team members you choose ensue, and soon everyone is ready to fix Gortys and fight the vault monster.

Loader Bot already assembled the pieces. He just needs Rhys and Fiona to insert the pieces attuned to them. Soon Gortys is back, and so is the Traveler.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 The Traveller

While everyone gets into position, Rhys tries talking Gortys into fighting, which she’s terrified of doing. After Rhys convinces Gortys to fight, she picks him up and loads him insider her a la Power Rangers, so he can fight for her.

Unfortunately all Rhys can do is fire finger guns. Luckily Gortys happens to have finger guns, and is able to start fighting the Traveler, getting him into position for Fiona and Sasha to drive into the exact spot he’s teleporting so they can destroy his teleportation gland.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 Gortys

Despite a valiant effort, Gortys is no match for the Traveler, and they soon find themselves on the ground with the Traveler about to destroy them – except he doesn’t. Gortys says the Traveler realizes if he destroys her, he’ll cease to exist.

Inside the Traveler, Fiona and Sasha are dealing with aliens inside the giant alien.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 The Guardians

The Guardians are holding Sasha and Fiona off, until they come up with a plan and use the zero gravity inside the Traveler when he teleports to launch themselves up to his gland and attach a remote bomb to it.

Gortys goes to pick up the rest of the team, and their combined powers are enough to start staggering the vault monster.

Tales from the Borderlands Episode 5 Inside Gortys
Power Rangers assemble…

As they’re launching out the mouth of the Traveler, Fiona and Sasha realize the remote won’t work, so Sasha jumps off the ship to detonate it as Fiona leaves the monster and crashes into the roof of Helios, where Vaughn is waiting for the laser to charge.

Soon an explosion goes off inside the vault monster, and it’s time for everyone to attack. Vaughn fires a laser, and Claptrap takes control of Gortys to kill the Traveler.

Rhys and Fiona look for Sasha and find her as she’s dying. Rhys tries to bring her back to life with his tears, but that’s stupid. Instead the watch Felix gave Sasha (and Fiona was holding for her, unless you opened it earlier in the game) revives her before dropping her on the ground hard.

Soon Rhys and Fiona are running for the portal to enter the vault and see what’s in the box. Before entering the portal, Fiona has a chance to either give Rhys her blessing to date Sasha or not. Sasha gets no say in whether or not she’s dated because she’s a woman.

Inside the vault, players control both Fiona and Rhys, so every response is up to you. Soon they open the vault, and disappear into a purple mist as the credits roll.
